There are plenty of small charities, orphanages, religious centres, associations, sports groups and reading clubs (to name but a few) in and around Maputo that you can be involved with on a regular or ad hoc basis - we have even organized for professional coaches to come and work with the national cricket team. You will be surprised just how easy it is to find ways to get integrated in to the community in a meaningful way. There is nothing we love more than putting you in touch with an association so that you can start to make a difference.
